Resolution on the Renewal of the Mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa


RESOLUTION ON THE RENEWAL OF THE MANDATE OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN AFRICA. ACHPR/Res.601 (LXXXI) 2024

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) meeting at its 81stOrdinary Session held from 17 October to 6 November 2024, in Banjul, The Gambia;

Recalling its mandate to promote human and peoples’ rights, pursuant to Article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights;

Further recalling its mandate to advocate for the ratification and implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Maputo Protocol);

Taking note of Resolution ACHPR/Res.38 (XXXVIII) 99, adopted at its 25th Ordinary Session, held from 26 April to 5 May 1999 in Bujumbura, Burundi, on the establishment of a Special Mechanism on the Rights of Women in Africa;

Recalling its decision taken at its 30th Ordinary Session, held from 17 to 27 October 2001 in Banjul, The Gambia, to appoint the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa;

Further Recalling Resolution ACHPR/Res.63(XXXIV) 03, adopted at its 34th Ordinary Session, held in Banjul, the Gambia, from 6 to 20 November 2003; the Resolution ACHPR/Res.78(XXXVIII) 05, adopted at its 38th Ordinary Session, held from 21 November to 6 December 2005 in Banjul, the Gambia, on the renewal of the Mandate of the Special Rapporteur for a period of two years; Resolution ACHPR/Res.112(XXXXII) 7 adopted at the 42nd Ordinary Session, held from 15 to 28 November 2007 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, on the renewal of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa; Resolution ACHPR/Res154 (XLVI) 09, ACHPR/Res.205 (L) 11, ACHPR/Res.245 (LIV) 2013 on the renewal of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur; ACHPR/Res.454 (LXVI) 2020 on the Renewal of the mandate and appointment of the Special Rapporteur; ACHPR/Res.505 (LXIX) 2021 on the appointment of the Special Rapporteur; and ACHPR/Res.529 (LXXIII) 2022 on the renewal of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur.

Aware that many challenges continue to confront women on the African continent;

Recognizing Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie's extensive efforts, which encompass advocacy for the ratification, domestication, implementation, and reporting of the Maputo Protocol, awareness of critical issues such as digital violence against women, sexual violence, and emerging concerns like femicide, obstetric violence, and the well-being of refugee and internally displaced women and girls;

Decides to renew for two years the mandate of Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie as the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, effective from 6 November 2024.
