RESOLUTION ON THE HARMONIZATION OF THE SPELLINGS IN MANDINGO

AND HAWSA LANGUAGES



The Council of Ministers of the Organization of Africa Unity meeting in its Thirty- fifth Ordinary Session in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from 18 to 28 June, 1980,


Considering Article XXIV of the Charter of the Organization of African Unity,



Considering Article 6 sub-paragraphs 1 (a) and 2 (b) of the African Cultural Charter,


Having Considered the reports on the harmonization of spellings of the Mandingo Languages (Niamey, November, 1979) on the one hand and of the Hawsa Language (Niamey, January, 1980) on the other:


  1. APPROVES the conclusions of these reports;



  1. RECOMMENDS that all Member States concerned take appropriate steps and co-operate so as to ensure their implementation;


  1. CALLS ON the Secretary-General to intensify efforts to promote national languages for economical, social and cultural development as well as for the strengthening of African Unity.
