Resolution on Afro-Arab Co-Operation


CM/Res.1138 (XLVII) RESOLUTION ON AFRO-ARAB CO-OPERATION

The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Forty-seventh Ordinary Session, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 22 to 27 February 1988,


Having considered the report of the Secretary-General contained in Document CM/1481 (XLVII),


Recalling the Declaration and Programme of Action of the First Afro-Arab Summit Conference held in Cairo, Egypt, from 7 to 8 March 1977,


Reaffirming its commitment to uphold the principles and objectives of Afro- Arab Co-operation,


Mindful of the fact that the organs established by the First Afro-Arab Summit should function regularly in the re-launching process of the various co-operation programmes of common interest to both parties,


Aware of the efforts being deployed by both parties in enhancing Afro-Arab Co- operation,


Considering the proposal of the League of Arab States with respect to the convening of an Ad Hoc meeting of the outgoing and current Chairman and the Secretaries-General of the two Organizations in order to exchange views on ways and means of reactivating Afro-Arab Co-operation and taking note of the fact that this meeting will be attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States concerned:


  1. TAKES NOTE of the report of the Secretary-General on Afro-Arab Co- operation;

  1. EXPRESSES ITS THANKS to the Government of Burkina Faso for the renewal of its invitation to host the Ninth Session of the Standing Commission for Afro-Arab Co-operation in Ouagadougou;


  1. COMMENDS the renewed efforts deployed by the Secretaries-General of the OAU and the League of Arab States in reactivating Afro-Arab Co- operation, and URGES them to pursue further efforts in close collaboration with the Government of Burkina Faso, with a view to convening the Ninth Session of the Standing Commission for Afro-Arab Co-operation as soon as possible;


  1. TAKES NOTE of the outcome of the consultative meeting of 15 December 1987 between the two Secretaries-General of the OAU and the League of Arab States and ACCEPTS the proposal for an Ad Hoc Meeting of the outgoing and Current Chairman and the Secretaries-General of the two Organizations, in order to exchange views on ways and means of reactivating Afro-Arab co-operation, it being understood that the meeting will be attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member Countries concerned;


  1. REQUESTS the Secretary-General to consult with his counterpart of the League of Arab States, with a view to convening the Ad Hoc Meeting, as early as possible, and to report to the next Session of the Council on the outcome of the meeting.
