RESOLUTION ON THE THIRD ORDINARY SESSION OF THE OAU CONFERENCE OF AFRICAN MINISTERS OF HEALTH


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Fiftieth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 17 to 22 July, 1989,


Having considered the report of the Secretary-General of the OAU on the Third Ordinary Session of the OAU Conference of African Ministers of Health held in Kampala, Republic of Uganda from 2 to 5 May 1989. (Document CM/1565 (L)),


Mindful of the Declaration AHG/Decl.1 (XXIII), adopted in July 1987 on “Health as a Foundation for Development”,


Conscious of the need to strengthen co-operation between Member States in the field of health to meet the growing challenges facing our continent,


Convinced that international co-operation in the field of socio-economic development can play an important role in enabling our continent to secure better health for all its people,


Concerned about the difficulties facing Africa in coping with the mounting problems such as the spread of AIDS, natural and man-made catastrophies, the danger of the dumping of toxic and nuclear wastes as well as the real financial constraints which are putting a serious strain on our health delivery systems:


  1. TAKES NOTE of the Secretary-General’s Report on the Third Ordinary Session of the OAU Conference of African Ministers of Health convened in Kampala, Republic of Uganda from 3 to 5 May, 1989;


  1. FULLY ENDORSES the resolutions contained in the Report;

  1. EXPRESSES its appreciation to the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the Pan -African Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response, the Global Programme on AIDS, for the technical assistance they rendered to facilitate the preparations for the Meeting;


  1. EXTENDS its gratitude to the Government, leadership and people of the Republic of Uganda for the magnificent facilities that led to the success of the meeting;


  1. CALLS UPON the OAU Secretary-General to report on the steps taken in the implementation of these resolutions and the progress achieved in this endeavor, to the Twenty-sixth Ordinary Session of the OAU Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
