RESOLUTION ON THE PROPOSED COOPERATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE ORGANIZATION OF AFRICAN UNITY AND THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES

The Council of Ministers of the organization of African Unity, meeting in its Sixty-third Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 26 to 28 February, 1996,

Having considered the Report of the Secretary-General on the proposed Cooperation Agreement between the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the -International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (International Federation), (Doc. CM/1930 (LXIII),

Considering the mandate of the International Federation and its important role, in inspiring, encouraging, facilitating and promoting all forms of humanitarian activities by national societies, with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of world peace;

Noting that the principles and objectives governing the activities of the International Federation are in conformity with the principles and purposes of the OAU,

Considering that the formalisation of already existing relations between the OAU and the International Federation will enable these two organizations to-strengthen their cooperation in order to harmonise and coordinate their activities in relevant fields of common interest:

  1. TAKES NOTE of the Report of the Secretary-General;


  1. APPROVES the Draft Cooperation Agreement between the OAU and the International Federation;

  2. AUTHORIZES the Secretary-General to sign the said Agreement with the duly empowered representative of the International Federation.
