Resolution on Enlargement of the Composition of the International Court of Justice

CM/Res. 203 (XIII)

RESOLUTION ON ENLARGEMENT OF THE COMPOSITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE

The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Thirteenth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 27 August to 6 September 1969,

Convinced of the need for the equitable representation of African States within the principal organs of the United Nations,

Recalling the amendments to the United Nations Charted concerning the enlargement of the composition of the Security Council and of the Economic and Social Council,

Considering that the present composition of the International Court of Justice does not fully reflect an equitable representation of the African continent:

  1. RECOMMENDS Member States of the OAU to raise the question of enlargement of the International Court of Justice in the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council;

  1. RECOMMENDS FURTHER that this question be placed as soon as possible, on the agenda of the Twenty-Fourth Ordinary Session of the United Nations General Assembly, on behalf of the Member States of the OAU;

  1. REQUESTS the Member States to concert their efforts to ensure that this question is given favourable consideration by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council;

  1. REQUESTS the African Group at the United Nations to take all the necessary steps to implement the present resolution and to report to the next session of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity.
