RESOLUTION ON THE INDIAN OCEAN AS A ZONE OF PEACE

The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Twenty Second Ordinary Session in Kampala, Uganda, from 1 to 4 April 1974,


After taking note of the UN General Assembly Resolution 2832 (XXVI) of 16 December 1971 containing the Declaration of the Indian Ocean as a zone of peace and Resolution 3080 (XXVIII) of 6 December 1973 confirming this Declaration;


Reaffirming the determination of Member States to work for peace and security i n the world, particularly in Africa,


After closely considering development in the situation in the Indian Ocean, development in the situation in the Indian Ocean,

Expressing its concern about the deployment of forces in the Indian Ocean particularly in expansion of the Anglo American base in Diego-Garcia,


  1. CONDEMNS the maintenance of this base and strongly denounces the Anglo American plan to enlarge the Diego-Garcia Base contrary to the United Nations Resolution referred to above and with poses a serious threat to peace and security in this area;


  1. EXORESSES its full solidarity with the African and Asian countries bordering the Indian Ocean struggling to make the Indian Ocean a zone of peace;

  1. APPEALS to all forces of peace and progress in the world to bring pressure to bear on the United States and Great Britain to abandon this plan;


  1. CONDEMNS any establishment or attempt to establish any imperialist bases in this area;
