DECISION ON THE REPORT OF THE AFRICAN COMMITTEE
OF EXPERTS ON THE RIGHTS AND WELFARE OF THE CHILD
DOC.EX.CL. 122 (V)

The Executive Council:

  1. TAKES NOTE of the Report;

  2. RECALLS the establishment of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child by the 37th Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, held in Lusaka, Zambia in July 2001;

  3. EXPRESSES ITS GRATITUDE to Save the Children Sweden for its financial support to the African Committee and CALLS ON other cooperating partners to follow suit;

  4. APPEALS to Member States to sign and ratify the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and establish appropriate mechanisms for its implementation, follow-up and evaluation;

  5. COMMENDS the Committee for the work done so far to address the challenges facing Africa’s children;

  6. APPEALS to Member States to extend their technical, moral and financial support to the Committee of Experts at national level;

  7. REQUESTS the Chairperson of the Commission to expedite the establishment of a Secretariat to service the Committee of Experts.
