DECISION ON THE PLAN OF ACTION ON

THE FAMILY IN AFRICA

The Executive Council:

  1. ENDORSES the Plan of Action on the Family in Africa as adopted by the Second Session of the AU Labour and Social Affairs Commission;

  2. EXPRESSES its appreciation to all cooperating partners for their invaluable contributions in the drafting of the Plan of Action;

  3. SUPPORTS AND COMMENDS the Government of the Republic of Benin for the efforts to organize the launching of the Plan of Action in Cotonou, Benin on 27 and 28 July 2004 and INVITES Member States to participate actively in the launching ceremony as well as in the World Summit on the Family;

  4. MANDATES the Government of Benin to present the Plan of Action to the 59th Session of the United Nations General Assembly as Africa’s contribution to the Tenth Anniversary of the International Year of the Family;

  5. REQUESTS that the Plan of Action be adopted as Africa’s Common Position to the World Summit on the Family to be held in China in December 2004;

  6. REQUESTS Member States to draw up a mechanism for follow-up and monitoring of the implementation of the Plan of Action;

  7. ALSO REQUESTS Member States to use the Plan of Action when formulating programmes for the family and submit progress reports on the status of implementation to AU Commission;

  8. REQUESTS the Chairperson of the Commission to submit a biennial progress report to the Executive Council on the implementation of the Plan of Action.
