DECISION ON THE POST OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE
UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME (UNEP)
The Executive Council,
1. TAKES NOTE of the following:
i) The vacancy for the position of Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP);
ii) In accordance with the United Nations General Assembly resolution 2997 (XXVII), the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme shall be elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the nomination of the Secretary-General for a term of four (4) years;
iii) It is the turn of the African Region to produce the Head of UNEP.
2. WELCOMES and SUPPORTS the three (3) candidatures expressed by Africa (in an alphabetical order) as follows:
i) Dr. Ahmed Djaghlaf (Algeria);
ii) Amb. Kamau Macharia (Kenya);
iii) Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw (Islamic Republic of Mauritania).
3. CALLS UPON the African Group at the United Nations, in New York, USA, to engage the UN Secretary General on the three African (3) candidatures;
4. REQUESTS the Commission to report on the implementation of this decision to the next ordinary session of the Executive Council in July 2016.
