INAUGURAL NEWSLETTER FOR PUBLISHERS IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Welcome all publishers in South Africa!  

This newsletter has been set up to provide you with information and assistance with regard to the Legal Deposit legislation in South Africa.  We hope to share relevant information with you from time to time and in the process, to answer some of your queries or concerns about legal deposit requirements and procedures.

Today, we would like to introduce ourselves to you:

1. Mr. Harry Nkadimeng

Legal Deposit Co-ordinator for the Ministry of Arts and Culture’s Legal Deposit Committee

I am employed by the National Library of South Africa and am the official Co-ordinator of the Legal Deposit Committee. I have an Honours Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and I am currently studying towards a Master Degree in the same field with a topic: Compliance with Legal Deposit Act by Publishers of Periodicals at the NLSA. My experience includes personnel management, provision of information through Interlibrary Loan and Reference Services, collections development through legal deposit.  I will be your liaison person for all matters relating to legal deposit.

2.Mrs. Denise Nicholson

 Member of the Ministry of Arts and Culture’s Legal Deposit Committee and Champion of  its Marketing and Advocacy Workgroup.   

I am employed as the Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.  I have a BA Degree and Higher Diploma in Librarianship and Information Science from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Law, Johannesburg. My dissertation was entitled: Accommodating Persons with Sensory Disabilities in South African Copyright Law".   I have also passed two modules on intellectual property issues through the WIPO/UNISA Intellectual Programme.  My experience and expertise includes personnel management, library and information issues, copyright, plagiarism, authors’ rights, scholarly communication, publishing issues, Open Access and Open Educational Resources.  I am also an author and have published various articles, book chapters and blog items.  I have contributed to many international and regional intellectual property projects, position papers, research studies and other documents for IFLA, eIFL, Commonwealth of Learning, WIPO, UNESCO, CopySouth, LIASA and others.  I am a member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)’s Advisory Committee on Copyright and Other Legal Matters, its eLending Workgroup, and a number of IP related committees, workgroups and initiatives.
